A first-hand account of the 2008 terrorist attacks in
Mumbai, India...
We have an
outstanding and timely guest speaker from the FBI,
Special Agent Steven Merrill.
SA Merrill, who was assigned as the Assistant Legal
Attache' at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi at the time of
the Mumbai attacks, was on his way to Jodhpur, India to
play cricket on the U.S. Embassy Team in the Maharajah's
annual tournament.
When he learned of the attacks, SA Merrill made his way
to Mumbai. All he had were the clothes on his back, his
Blackberry, and his cricket gear. He immediately made
contact with his Indian counterparts and got to work. No
red tape, no turf battles - just first responders,
standing shoulder to shoulder in a time of crisis. SA
Merrill helped rescue hostages, set up lines of
communication with his FBI and intelligence community
counterparts and coordinated the arrival of the FBI
Rapid Deployment Team.
